Environmental conservation efforts continue to be promoted through symbolic mangrove planting activities in Berakit Village, Bintan Regency, Riau Islands. This activity marks the beginning of a series of women's empowerment and mangrove ecosystem restoration programs in Berakit Village.
Mangroves play a crucial role in coastal ecosystems, not only as a natural barrier protecting land from erosion and large waves but also as a habitat for various marine species. With increasing threats to coastal areas due to climate change and human activities, this rehabilitation effort is vital in maintaining ecosystem balance.
Various parties contributed to this activity, including representatives from the Riau Islands Province Marine and Fisheries Department, the Head of the Bintan Regency Fisheries Department, the Bintan Regency Women’s Empowerment Department, representatives from the Dean of the Faculty of Marine Sciences and Fisheries at UMRAH, the Care Peduli Foundation, Traveloka, the Riau Islands Ecology Foundation, and the beneficiary community group. The involvement of these various elements demonstrates that mangrove conservation efforts are not the responsibility of a single party but require synergy and collaboration from all segments of society.
The mangrove planting in this coastal area is also expected to provide economic benefits for the community, particularly for those dependent on the fisheries and ecotourism sectors. Healthy mangroves can serve as spawning grounds for fish and shrimp, thereby increasing fishermen's catches. Additionally, well-preserved mangrove areas have significant potential to be developed as ecotourism destinations, opening up business opportunities for local residents.
In addition to the planting activity, the event also included a session to socialize the series of programs that will be implemented.
Through close collaboration between the government, community, and other stakeholders, this initiative is expected to have a tangible positive impact in the long term, both for environmental conservation and the well-being of coastal communities.
