The UN climate summit, COP26 which was held in Glasgow, Scotland from 13 October to 12 November, brought together leaders from around the world to develop their vision for tackling the common challenge of global warming.

Since 1994, the United Nations has annually brought together almost every country on earth to take part in the global climate summit or COP, which stands for Conference of the parties. Supposedly, 2021 was the 27th global COP. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the implementation of the COP was delayed by a year so this year it will be held as COP26.

Then what is COP26?

COP26 is the largest and most important climate conference that has been adopted by the United Nations since 1992 where the United Nations held a major event in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, known as the Earth Summit. During the event, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was adopted. Through the UNFCCC, countries agree to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere to prevent harmful interference from human activities in the climate system. Currently, the treaty has 197 signatories.

Why is COP26 Important?

Climate change has turned into a life-threatening global emergency in the last three decades. Despite new commitments made by countries in the run-up to COP26, some researchers predict the global temperature rise will rise by 2.7 degrees Celsius this century. A temperature rise of that magnitude by the end of the century will cause massive damage to the earth and result in many natural disasters that have been felt to the extent of the deadliest of the world's most vulnerable. Even Millions of people have been displaced and resulted in casualties from disasters exacerbated by climate change. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and hundreds of scientists from around the world said on Climate Change (IPCC), a threshold of 1.5 degrees Celsius is the only way to prevent further damage to the earth. The clock is ticking and to limit gains, the world will need to halve its greenhouse gas emissions in the next eight years. This is a huge task that can only be undertaken if the leaders attending COP26 come up with ambitious, time-bound plans and phase out coal to achieve zero emissions.

Speech of the President of the Republic of Indonesia Jokowi at COP 26

Here are some things that President Jokowi said in his speech at COP26. First, global solidarity, partnership, cooperation and collaboration are key to the threat to global prosperity and development caused by climate change. Second, President Jokowi mentioned Indonesia's contributions in dealing with climate change, including rehabilitating 600,000 hectares of mangrove forest until 2024 and rehabilitating 3 million critical lands. Indonesia also continues to move forward in the energy sector as evidenced by the construction of the largest solar power plant in Southeast Asia, the construction of the world's largest green industrial area in North Kalimantan, and so on. Third, the President also said that Indonesia would continue to mobilize climate finance and innovative financing as well as mixed financing, green bonds and green sukuk. To support this, it is necessary to provide climate with developed country partners as game changers in climate change mitigation and adaptation actions in developing countries. In addition, President Jokowi added that the carbon market and carbon price must be part of efforts to address climate change issues.
